Let's face it, being gluten free is difficult especially during vacation.
From trying to find the perfect, accommodating restaurant all the way to finding something on a menu that you think will actually be tasty (and safe) to eat, eating out gluten free can be a stressful and daunting task.
I mean seriously, who wants to spend all vacation worrying about trying to find gluten free foods and snacks. Vacation is a time to relax and be free from all the stresses of the real world.
But thankfully, there's one place that you don't need to stress out about eating gluten free – DISNEY WORLD.
Disney World, and Disney's other theme parks and cruises, is by the best, most accommodating place for anyone with allergies, especially if you're gluten free.
From personalized care all the way to safe and delicious gluten free meals made on dedicated equipment, guests with gluten allergies can always find something safe to eat at almost every quick service or table service restaurant.
In this in-depth guide, you'll learn just how and where you can get yourself a delicious gluten free meal, while also learning about some cool and tasty gluten free Disney treats along the way.
So with that being said, let's jump straight into the guide!
What to Do Before Your Visit
One of the first thing every needs to do before planning a trip to Walt Disney World is find delicious Disney restaurants that they want to dine at.
For any first time visitor, I recommend trying a Disney character meal (check out the full listing here) as well as some popular, must-visit restaurants that most Disney fans rave about like Ohana and Be Our Guest.
Then once you got that squared away, you should definitely read Disney's policy on dining with allergies.
In there, you'll learn about how to deal with multiple allergies as well as how to plan dining experiences around eating disorders such as phenylketonuria, metabolic disorders, or even how to plan dining experiences with guests or groups who all have the same allergies or intolerance.
If that's the case, you should email Walt Disney World Resort Special Diets at Special.Diets@WaltDisneyWorld.com after you booked your dining arrangements at least 14 days before your arrival.
But if you suffer from a normal or more popular food allergy, you can make those special dietary requests on the phone or through the My Disney Experience app when booking dining reservations.
Now it's time to choose the perfect gluten free Disney World restaurant and make an advanced dining reservation.
Eating Gluten Free at Disney Restaurants
Planning where you want to eat during your visit to Disney World doesn't have to be stressful if you or someone in your party suffers from a gluten allergy or intolerance.
Disney Cast Members make this process completely stress free.
The hardest part is trying to pick the right restaurant.
But don't worry, here are some helpful ways to narrow down your choices.
Where Is It Safe to Eat Gluten Free at Disney World?
Thankfully, most if not all table service restaurants and some participating quick at Disney World can accommodate almost all mainstream food allergies including:
- gluten or wheat
- lactose or milk
- peanuts or tree nuts
- shellfish
- soy
- fish
- eggs
- corn
Now when it comes to choosing a gluten free restaurant at Disney, there are a few limitations as to where it's available.
Gluten Free at Table Service Restaurants
Most if not all table service restaurants at Disney World parks and resorts are able to provide gluten free menus and alternate meal options just for you.
Just make sure that you let the restaurant know during your reservation booking process that you have guests dining with special dietary needs. You should also let them know once you arrive at the restaurant as well.
Gluten Free Disney World Buffets
Upon arrival to any Disney World buffet, guests should ask to speak to a chef or manager to get a run down of all the available gluten free options on the buffet line.
Just note that at a buffet, not all dietary needs can be made due to some limitations.
Gluten Free at Quick Service Restaurants
Only a select few quick service restaurants are able to hand special dietary requests. But thankfully that number is growing rapidly.
From ice cream shops to pizza and burger joints, you're able to dine gluten free even at fast casual locations.
The only thing you'll need to do is alert the cashier that you have a dietary restrict or allergy and they'll promptly get you a manager or coordinator who can walk you through everything that's safe to eat.
Then they'll personally make your meal using special ingredients, products, and dedicated equipment.
Plus another cool thing is that at Animal Kingdom, there's a 100% gluten free eatery called the Gardens Kiosk that offers gluten free food and snacks for you to purchase.
It's pretty awesome.
Gluten Free at Signature Restaurants
Some Disney World signature restaurants like Victoria and Albert's will actually make a personalized gluten free menu just for you and your party. Now that's world class customer service. If you have a reservation at Victoria & Albert's, you should should call (407) WDW-DVNA or (407) 939-3862 to discuss your dietary needs and preferences.
Now not all signature restaurants will do this but most are extremely accommodating.
One more thing about restaurants…
One thing that you need to know about Disney World restaurants is the fact that there are no separated kitchen areas dedicated for food allergies. The only thing they offer is dedicated equipment (in a shared kitchen) as well as dedicated products for your special dietary needs.
So if you're scared of cross contamination, just note that it's not always going to be 100% safe. But in all honestly, no place is, unless you're dining at a 100% gluten free restaurant.
What to Do When You Arrive at Your Restaurant
Sure you can plan your gluten free dining experience for Walt Disney World, but that will mean nothing if you don't alert the cashier (at quick service restaurants) or your waiter/hostess (at table service restaurant) that you or someone in your party has a food allergy or intolerance, you may run the risk of getting glutened.
That's why it's super important to let the server know that you're dining with a gluten or wheat allergy.
Once you're seated you'll usually get a special gluten free menu for that particular restaurant.
But if that's not enough, you can usually request a chef or Cast Member trained in special diets before placing your food order to help walk you through the process of building a meal that suits your needs.
If that's the cast, a chef or Cast Member will come to you and discuss your allergy needs as well as made a special meal just for you or any guests that need it.
So always remember to tell your server about your gluten or wheat allergy/intolerance prior to arrival and at arrival.
There's always that small chance when your dietary request wasn't seen or processed during the restaurant reservation process.
Gluten Free Snacks and Treats
Now let's get to the fun stuff – gluten free Disney World snacks and treats!
Believe it or not, there are plenty of gluten free Disney World snacks and treats that you can enjoy during your visit.
Although you can't eat churros, Mickey pretzels, or most things in that popular French bakery at Epcot, there are some incredible delicious things you can munch and sip on during the day.
Here are some of my favorites that I believe you definitely need to put on your Disney World food bucket list.
Buying Gluten Free Snacks at Disney
There are some delicious snacks that you can buy at Disney World that are gluten free and safe to eat.
Here's some tasty gluten free options available:
Dole Whip
That's right, the ever so popular and cult favorite is gluten free! I recommend getting the dole whip float because it's delicious pineapple ice cream and fresh pineapple juice. It's the ultimate way to cool off during a blazing hot day at Magic Kingdom.
LeFou's Brew
Apple slushee infused with toasted marshmallow syrup, topped with passion fruit foam. It's delicious. Not Harry Potter World butterebeer delicious, but it's a close second. You can find this at Gaston's Tavern in New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom.
Popcorn
Freshly popped salty and buttery popcorn is the go to snack at Disney World. And it's literally impossible to avoid since all you'll do when walking around the parks is smell this buttery goodness.
Soft Serve Ice Cream
The soft service ice cream at Disney World is delicious! Just make sure you don't get a cone with it! I personally recommend getting it in a float. Or you can get it with strawberry topping which is equally as good.
Mickey Ice Cream Bar
I swear that any food shaped like Mickey Mouse tastes 20% better than the rest and this ice cream bar is no different. You can find these at ice cream carts in all the parks as well as the stores/gift shops at most Disney resorts.
Sundaes
The sundaes, like this one from Beaches and Cream at Disney's Beach Club Resort, are to die for. Chocolate and vanilla ice cream topped with hot fudge, warm peanut butter, whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry. Mmmmmm.
Slushees
Slushees and smoothies are another great gluten free drink option at Disney World. I personally like Wheezy's Breezy Freezy at Hollywood Studios.
Cakes and Cupcakes
Besides from the gluten free baked goods at the Gardens Kiosk at Animal Kingdom, you can also enjoy vegan gluten free cupcakes at Erin McKenna's Bakery NYC in Disney Springs.
Margaritas
Yes, most margaritas are gluten free! The same can't be same for all alcoholic drinks on Disney property. That's why it's important to check out our gluten free alcohol listing and this popular in-depth guide to make sure that the tequila, hard liquor, or mixer being used in your drink is gluten free.
